Spy chiefs unveil MI6's Christmas card

The name’s Claus… Santa Claus: Spy chiefs unveil MI6’s Christmas card – featuring a very familiar figure in the famous 007 movie gun barrel

  • Bond’s Walter PPK handgun appears to have turned into candy cane
  • Current MI6 chief Richard Moore- or C- is known to be Bond fan

For years they have had a love-hate relationship with the world’s most famous spy.

But this Christmas MI6 chiefs have fully embraced James Bond – on their festive greeting card.

Santa takes the place of 007 in a homage to the gun barrel sequence from the films’ opening credits, while his Walther PPK handgun appears to have turned into a candy cane.

Current MI6 chief Richard Moore – or C – is known to be a Bond fan, calling the series ‘wonderful’, while stressing it is ‘not reality’.

The film sequence has featured in every Bond film since Dr No in 1962.

It is credited to title designer Maurice Binder who used a pin hole camera to film the inside of a real gun barrel.

But he surely never envisaged Santa Claus in his red suit, hat and white beard shooting towards the camera.

The card is understood to have been designed in-house by MI6.

The inside of the gun barrel has been coloured green – a nod, perhaps, to the tradition that Chief, known as ‘C’, writes in green ink.
