Spotify chief Daniel Ek has revealed the real reason Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's staggering £18million podcast failed in a rare media appearance.

The Duke and Duchess' work on the Archetypes podcast did little to win over Mr Ek, who earlier this year confirmed there would be no second season. He has since admitted the groundbreaking deal had not gone to plans.

It appears they had missed a crucial detail which would have helped the duo in the long run. But a "mutual" agreement to end the contract and move on from Archewell Audio and Spotify's relationship was made.

Speaking on the reasons for the deal falling through, Daniel Ek believed "new innovation" was needed and not received. He later slammed the Duke and Duchess for not managing to connect with an audience.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "We thought new innovation was needed to happen here. We thought we can come in and offer a great experience that both makes consumers very happy and allows new creators new avenues.

"And the truth of the matter is some of it has worked, some of it hasn't. We're learning from those and we are moving on and we wish all of the ones we didn't renew with the best of success they can have going forward."

Ek has since admitted a spending spree of £827million hit Spotify as they began trusting in projects which have since ended. One such podcast plan was the work of Barack and Michelle Obama, which ended last year.

Mr Ek's calm comments come just months after the Daily Star reported the furious words of executive Bill Simmons, who labelled the couple as "f***ing grifters". His furious comments came as the Sussex duo failed to make good on their £15million series.

Speaking back in June, Mr Simmons said: "I wish I’d been involved in the Meghan and Harry leave Spotify negotiation. The f***ing grifters. That's the podcast we should have launched with them. I've got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It's one of my best stories."

The Sussex duo clearly left an impression on Mr Simmons, though not the best one. The Spotify executive went on a fascinatingly strange rant about the pair and asked they be shot "to the sun".
