Seven horses and a llama seized in Arapahoe County as part of an animal cruelty investigation

Seven horses and a llama were seized Tuesday in Arapahoe County as part of an animal cruelty investigation.

Deputies served a search warrant in the 89000 block of East County Road 18, near Deer Trail, after receiving a complaint about the animals’ treatment and living conditions, according to an Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The sheriff’s office said the horses are “extremely malnourished” and that none of the animals had access to food or water. The llama was described as being thin, with hair so matted that its “movement was hampered.”

An investigation is ongoing and animal cruelty charges are pending, the sheriff’s office said.

The Colorado Humane Society, the Department of Agriculture and the Dumb Friends League were on scene Tuesday. The animals were immediately fed by responders and the neglected horses were taken to the Harmony Equine Center in Franktown.
