Prison officer sent racy messages to lag she kissed and had paint fight with

A prison officer who sent intimate messages to a lag has been handed a suspended sentence.

Lyn Yorke, 50, had been a senior prison officer at HMP Peterborough for 16 years but resigned last year.

Colleagues said in statements that Yorke appeared close with the inmate, who was serving time for robbery and on one occasion the pair had a paint fight when she was helping him paint an office.

She was caught writing intimate messages to him on a newspaper in August last year, and a number of other messages were found during a search of the prisoner's cell, reports CambridgeshireLive.

There were also numerous phone calls between the pair.

During an interview, Yorke admitted that they had kissed on one or two occasions while she was at work, but that nothing else had happened.

The man was subsequently moved to another prison and Yorke resigned in October last year.

On Tuesday (July 26) Yorke, of Denmark Drive, Peterborough, received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months at Peterborough Crown Court, after pleading guilty to the charge of misconduct in public office.

Detective Constable Shelly Reeve said: “Yorke held a position of responsibility and public trust but betrayed all of that with her behaviour at the prison. She was a senior prison officer for more than 15 years so she should have known better and has now paid a price for her misconduct.”
