Passenger jet ‘loses contact’ after steep dive as ‘aircaft seen in ocean’

A passenger plan that lost contact with flight controllers appears to have plunged into the ocean after it took a steep mid-air dive.

The Sriwijaya Air passenger flight took off from Jakarta airport in Indonesia at 7.40am and "lost contact" with air controllers shortly after.

FlightRadar24 shows flight SJ182 took a nose dive shortly after pictures emerged of an object sinking into the sea online.
