Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to address the nation again at 5pm today (Tuesday).

The address comes after Monday's announcement plunging the nation into a national lockdown.

Boris Johnson is to hold a No 10 press conference with the chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, and the Government's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, at 5pm on Tuesday, Downing Street has said.

On Monday evening people were told to "stay at home" and only leave the house for essential trips.

The national lockdown was announced after Scotland's First Minister declared a stay at home order earlier on Monday.

Mr Johnson announced the lockdown will last until at least mid-February with schools shut.

He announced the measures after a surge in cases following the discovery of a new variant of the deadly coronavirus last month.

The PM urged Brits to immediately stay at home – from Monday night.

All primary schools, secondary schools and colleges have been moved to remote provision from Tuesday, January 5, except for children of key workers and vulnerable kids who can attend in person.

Early years – e.g. nurseries, alt provision and special schools – remain open.

"As I speak to you tonight, our hospitals are under more pressure from Covid than at any time since the start of the pandemic," the Prime Minister said.

The new measures come into place as the number of hospital admissions increased to a higher figure than at any point during the first wave.
