Rishi Sunak publishes legal advice on Rwanda Bill in ‘highly unusual’ move
Sunak defends new Rwanda plan
Rishi Sunak has ordered officials to publish the legal advice for his Rwanda Bill to allow deportations of illegal migrants to the East African country after last month’s Supreme Court ruling blocked the policy.
The move comes as Tory MPs on both the right and left of his party have made objections.
MPs on the right have fallen behind legal advice by veteran Brexiteer Sir Bill Cash and his star chamber of lawyers which argues the Bill is not fit for purpose and cannot be amended.
Meanwhile, the One Nation group has raised concerns about it blocking international law.

The legal advice from the Government lays out why the Bill is necessary and explains why the government has gone as far as it has on the measures to get the deportation flight off the ground.
Importantly, it states: “This Bill reflects that Parliament is sovereign and can change domestic law as it sees fit including, if that is Parliament’s judgment, requiring a state of affairs or facts to be recognised. This is the central feature of the Bill and many of its other provisions are designed to ensure that Parliament’s conclusion on the safety of Rwanda is accepted by the domestic courts.”
Crucially it adds that the Bill provides: “A clear statement of Parliament’s view that Rwanda is safe, ‘notwithstanding’ all specified domestic legislation and the common law, and any alternative interpretation of international law including customary international law.”
This was a key demand from Tory MPs on the right of the party.
