Former Brexit Minister Lord Frost claimed that Westminster should fight back against the SNP as it would be “a humiliation if the UK were to be broken up”. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, on Thursday, August 19, Lord Frost suggested that the devolution settlement is “not written in stone” and that it can “evolve back too”.

He added: “We can begin by stopping mission creep. The devolved administrations do not have powers in foreign relations or immigration – they are ‘reserved matters’.

“So why was the SNP able to control who came into the country during the pandemic on the basis of public health laws? Why are they spending taxpayers’ money on their own ’embassies’ overseas?

“If the UK Government does not police these boundaries, soon they will no longer exist.”

Lord Frost also suggested that for another independence vote there would need to be overwhelming support.

He explained: “I would suggest 75 percent of seats in the Scottish Parliament in favour of independence, over a 10-year period, legally binding. Without that, a referendum should simply be impossible.”

He called for the next Prime Minister to ensure they treat the UK as a singular state.

Both candidates, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, have suggested they would sideline the Scottish Parliament.

Both rejected a second Scottish independence referendum during leadership hustings in Perth, earlier this week.

Lord Frost’s remarks sparked outrage among nationalists with Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon sharing her thoughts on Twitter.

On Thursday, August 19, she wrote: “Make no mistake, the Tories are coming for devolution. If we don’t decide to entrench @scotparl through independence, its powers will be eroded – forced, according to this by one of the architects of the Brexit disaster, to ‘evolve back’.”

Similarly, Paisley and Renfrewshire MP Gavin Newlands tweeted: “David Frost’s efforts in politics have been a litany of failures so far. Now he suggests that acting on democratic mandates is immoral…

“Put simply, the Tories don’t believe in democracy anymore. They *do* believe in self-determination all around the globe, just not for Scotland.”

Ms Sturgeon has announced plans to hold a second independence referendum, on October 19, 2023.

The SNP argues that since Scotland voted to remain in the EU in the Brexit referendum, a second ballot on independence is necessary.

The referendum would be less than a decade after the previous vote in 2014, which saw Scots vote 55 percent to 45 percent to remain.
