Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington to meet US President Joe Biden on Wednesday (December 21).

The trip to the nation's capital will be Zelenksy's first trip outside Ukraine since the war with Russia began in February earlier this year.

The White House confirmed the trip in a statement as they said: "The visit will underscore the United States’ steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes, including through the provision of economic, humanitarian, and military assistance."

Zelensky took to Twitter to talk about his upcoming trip as he said he will "strengthen resilience and defense capabilities" of Ukraine.

Zelensky is to visit the Oval Office for talks with US President Joe Biden, who is set to announce that the US will be sending nearly $2 billion (£1.6billion) in additional security assistance to Ukraine.

That includes a new air defense system which will most likely be covered in a joint White House news conference before the Ukrainian president addresses members of Congress.

The visit by the Ukrainian leader to Washington, expected to last only a matter of hours, nonetheless amounts to a remarkable moment 10 months since Russia’s war in Ukraine began.
