Woman ‘seriously injured’ as witness ‘saw house blown apart’ in gas explosion

    Firefighters have been scrambled to reports of a horrific explosion which is believed to have seen the front of a house blown off with a woman reported to have been seriously injured.

    A property is thought to have been severely damaged on the bottom floor of the end terrace after what emergency services described as an "explosion".

    The blast is understood to have taken place on Commercial Road, in Bulwell to the north of Nottingham.

    Local residents have been asked to avoid the area following the incident.

    On Twitter, Nottingham Fire and Rescue said: "We are currently in attendance at an incident on Commercial Road, Bulwell.

    "Five fire engines from Stockhill, Arnold, Eastwood and Highfields are on scene.

    "Please avoid the area and keep your windows and doors closed."

    Early reports from people in the area have discussed the explosion, with one Twitter user saying: "house explosion Bulwell wow hope all ok".

    Another eyewitness report on Twitter said: "Omg there as just been [a] house explosion whole house came apart front and back, near me up the road. I hope everyone is OK. I've just been told it was the boiler."

    Shocking images show debris spread out into the street.

    Bins can be seen knocked over with bricks covering the street outside the property. Images of the scene show shocked bystanders, some of which appear to be making phone calls.

    Posting an update on the situation Nottingham Fire and Rescue added on Twitter: "Update: The incident has involved an explosion at an end terrace property on Commercial Road.

    "The explosion has severely damaged the front ground floor of the property.

    "We are working with colleagues to establish the cause of the explosion. Please continue to avoid the area."

    Inspector Paul Ferguson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Emergency services were called to a house in Commercial Road, Bulwell, following reports of a potential gas explosion.

    “A man who was seriously injured in the incident, which happened around 12.05pm, has since been taken to hospital via ambulance.

    “The affected building sustained considerable damage in the explosion and neighbouring properties have been evacuated.

    “Road closures are currently in place in Bulwell on Commercial Street, Mersey Street, Belgrave Road and Latham Street.

    “A cordon remains in place at the scene and the police are working with partners at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to establish what happened.

    “Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the police on 101, quoting incident 278 of 22 November 2022, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
