Woman faints while being cruelly lashed in public flogging for extramarital sex
Shocking pictures from the city of Banda Aceh in Indonesia show a woman collapsing in agony during a brutal Sharia punishment for the 'crime' of sex outside of marriage.
The unnamed woman was sentenced to 17 strokes of the lash along with her partner.
The punishment was carried out by an official, or Algojo, wearing a head-to-toe brown cloak with their identity obscured by a domino-type mask.
The woman, wearing traditional Islamic dress, was flogged with a bamboo cane. Pictures show her slumping to the ground in agony as the punishment is carried out.
Her partner was flogged at the same event, staring defiantly out into the audience as the cane rose and fell.
Aceh is the only Indonesian province which operates under Sharia law – which sees rules governed by a radical interpretation of Islam's holy book the Quran.
The most serious sentences – for homosexuality, for example – can entail up to 150 lashes. Victims frequently pass out during their sentence or have to be hospitalised afterwards.
In 2018, the local government pledged to end its policy of public corporal punishment, saying that future floggings would take place in prisons instead. However, despite that promise, the number of public floggings and canings has actually risen, reports the Daily Mail.

In June last year, a similar public flogging saw a man collapse during a hundred-stroke flogging in Aceh.
The man who had fallen foul of the region's super-strict Sharia laws on pre-marital sex fainted part way though a brutal 100 lash caning and had to be revived by medics before the sentence was completed.
The 22-year-old man begged a masked Sharia officer to stop lashing his back with a rattan cane before passing out.
The prisoner was revived and given brief medical attention and then the flogging continued. He was later rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
An elite all-female flogging squad has been recruited to dole out punishments to female transgressors.
The team of eight women have been trained in the appropriate flogging technique and advised how to minimise permanent injury.
Banda Aceh Sharia police chief investigator Zakwan said: "We train them to make sure they're physically fit and teach them how to do a proper whipping.
"It's kind of an indoctrination that we give to them so they have a better understanding of their role – have no mercy for those who violate God's law," he added.
