Wine-maker sells strange Hitler and Stalin themed drinks and they’re ‘big hits’

An Italian wine manufacturer is being investigated by authorities after they stocked and sold bottles of wine emblazoned with Adolf Hitler's face on them.

Stunned Philadelphia lawyer Matthew Hirsch chanced upon the bottles in a small supermarket in Garda while on holiday and complained but was allegedly told by the shopkeeper they were 'part of history.'

The grotesque bottles show the nazi leader in a variety of poses and salutes and include slogans like “Mein Führer”, “Sieg Heil” and “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer”.

The Times reports that Italian winemaker Vini Lunardelli is responsible for the wines and a browse on their website shows it's not just the Fuhrer they've dabbled in.

As part of their Communist Collection they also stock wines modelled on Russian dictator Joseph Stalin, Josep Tito and Lenin.

The description of their red wine dedicated to Uncle Joe, a man responsible for the deaths of millions, reads: " Intense ruby red wine, tending to purplish.

"The scent is intense, tannic and slightly herbaceous, with hints of raspberry and young blueberry. The taste is full, savory and dry, very robust and suitable for long aging."

Disgusted by his discovery, Matthew Hirsch told Italian site Corriere della Sera: “I was shocked. It is not just an affront to Jews, despite my husband and I being Jewish. It is an affront to humanity as a whole."

Austrian plastic surgeon Dr Dagmar Millesi also came across the bottles in a resort near Venice and complained to a supermarket employee.

She said: "The store employee said Germans very much like to buy these wines, and they are clearly the big hit there.

“The saleswoman was even amused at my outrage . . . nobody is angry about it, no one forbids it . . . I couldn’t believe it.”

The incident has shocked Italy and local and national prosecutors have taken notice.

Reacting to the news, the mayor of Verona said Hitler's wine would be removed from supermarkets.

Speaking to news agency Ansa, prosecutor Mario Giulio Schinaia said: "The only crime that could be currently attributable to this is that of apologising for fascism.

“At this point though, it would be opportune to invent the crime of human stupidity.”

Italian integration minister Andrea Riccardi added: “I want to reassure our American friends who visit our country that our Constitution and our culture rejects racism, anti-Semitism and Nazi fascism.

“This offends the memory of millions of people and risks compromising the image of Italy abroad."
