US buys £250m of anti-radiation pills as Putin threats to unleash nuclear fury
Radiation pills designed to treat the sickening symptoms of a nuclear attack have been bought by the US Government amid bonkers Vladimir Putin’s threats to unleash grim weapons of mass destruction.
American officials spent an eye-watering $290million (£258million) on the potentially life-saving treatments which can reduce deadly bleeding from a nuclear fall-out.
It comes just days after the Daily Star revealed a military expert’s warnings that the Russian dictator was “frightened” over his army’s failures in Ukraine and is therefore more likely to press his lethal red button.

The unhinged tyrant vowed he wasn’t bluffing with his nuclear threats and threatened to use “all the means at [his] disposal” to push his agenda.
But despite the highly-publicised nuclear tensions, the US Government tried to issue reassurance that its purchase of the Nplate pills, used to treat acute radiation syndrome (ARS), was nothing to do with Putin.
A spokesperson for the Human Services Department (HSS) in Washington, who announced the decision, told The Daily Telegraph: "This is part of our ongoing work for preparedness and radiological security. It has not been accelerated by the situation in Ukraine."

The drug, which is also used to treat patients with blood platelets, was investigated by the HSS alongside pharmaceutical company Novartis to see if it could also save lives in a nuclear accident.
HSS boffins explained: “ARS, also known as radiation sickness, occurs when a person's entire body is exposed to a high dose of penetrating radiation, reaching internal organs in a matter of seconds.
"Symptoms of ARS injuries include impaired blood clotting as a result of low platelet counts, which can lead to uncontrolled and life-threatening bleeding.
"To reduce radiation-induced bleeding, Nplate stimulates the body's production of platelets. The drug can be used to treat adults and children."
