UK gripped by ‘chuckle crisis’ with Brits unable to remember last proper laugh

Brits are suffering a “laughter deficit” – with many unable to say when they last chuckled.

Experts say finding ways to make yourself laugh – like reading your hilarious Daily Star – is good for your health.

But we are simply not getting enough, with as many as 42% not remembering the last time they laughed out loud. On the flip side, a cheerier 30% claim there is always something to have a good giggle about.

And a huge 95% agreed that having a belly laugh is great for your mental health.

Sophie Scott, a neuroscientist at University College London, said: “Cortisol is a stress hormone that laughter lowers.”

She added that anticipation of laughter also “drops your adrenaline”.

The study found that we use shows like classic Del Boy sitcom Only Fools and Horses to make us laugh.

Zai Bennett, of Sky, which ran the poll, said: “The nation needs a bit of light relief.”
