UK flood warnings: Environment Agency issues nearly 300 alerts as rain pelts UK

River Severn flooding: Bewdley resident discusses impact

Flood alerts and warnings have come into effect across the UK today. The Environment Agency has issued hundreds of advisories in the face of severe weather predicted by the Met Office. The forecasters have five in place over the next week.

Today’s collection of notices cover almost all of England, according to maps on the Environment Agency website.

They issued a total of 232 flood alerts, which indicate “possible” flooding.

Another 53 flood warnings which indicate “expected” flooding brings the total to 285 across the UK.

The warnings – the second most severe flood notice – cover areas from London up to Yorkshire.

Anyone under a flood warning or alert should receive a message from Floodline.

Flood alerts expect “low lying” land will see excess water, and anyone living under one should ensure they take steps to prepare.

They should do so by readying a bag with medicine and documents in case they have to leave.

Otherwise, they must stay vigilant and pay attention to alerts from the Environment Agency.

Flood warnings require people to act as soon as possible.

Anyone affected by one should turn off their utilities, including gas, water and electricity.

They would then move to an upper floor if they have one and take family, pets and their car to safety.

The Environment Agency also has advice for severe flood warnings, which specifies taking emergency action, but none are in effect today.
