Two women arrested for 'trying to shoot at cops during carjacking before wild chase that left schools on lockdown'

TWO women were arrested for allegedly trying to shoot at police officers during an attempted carjacking.

Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, launched a manhunt for Lizeth Iguado, 33 and Felicia Gonzales, 39, on Tuesday morning after they fled in a vehicle after the alleged shooting.

A witness found the suspects' black Jeep and called 911, but when police caught up with the suspects, they allegedly shot at the deputy.

The officer was not struck, officials confirmed.

The pair then allegedly abandoned their SUV and fled on foot before breaking into a trailer on private property.

Multiple agencies, including a bomb unit and SWAT team then coaxed the pair to come out.

The alleged shooting sparked a shelter in place order for several K-8 schools in the area.

Lockdown orders were issued for Los Padillas Elementary, Pajarito Elementary and Polk Middle School.

Officers also issued a shelter in place notice to residents in the area.

Law enforcement established a perimeter between Coors Blvd SW and Isleta Blvd SW in downtown Albuquerque.

The lockdowns were lifted shortly after 2.30pm local time.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office said deputies were attempting to conduct a traffic stop in the neighborhood when the shots rang out.

The suspects are allegedly local repeat offenders, and Iguado was reportedly on probation after being convicted of shooting at a car in 2019, Bernalillo County authorities said.

"It is incredibly disappointing that New Mexico has such a broken criminal justice system that these suspects lack fear of prosecution enough to shoot at our deputies."
