Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that his face would be added to Mount Rushmore if he were a Democrat.
Trump’s allies have long flattered him with the idea that his likeness belongs in granite alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.
“I know, I know — yeah, I would have,” Trump told host Dan Bongino during a podcast discussion published Wednesday, agreeing with Bongino’s suggestion that Trump would have been added to the South Dakota monument if he were a Democrat.
Trump also told Bongino that if he chooses to seek a second term in 2024, he’s likely to announce the decision immediately after the November 2022 congressional midterm elections.
“If I do that — and I am giving it the most serious consideration — I think probably the most appropriate time would be right after the ’22 election. That’s my opinion,” Trump said.
“I could do it sooner, but I think right after the election would be good, especially if you have a good election. Now I’m not sure if you didn’t have a good election, I’m not sure that that wouldn’t be good also, if you want to know the truth.”
Trump also slammed Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican who was one of his frequent critics while he was in office. He said Hogan likely wants to run for president, but that he would defeat him even in his own state.
“This guy, I watch him. He’s a total loser and he hasn’t been a good governor,” Trump said. “I think he wants to run. I think I would give him less than a zero percent chance.”
Trump said, “I think that’s right” that he would beat Hogan in Maryland.

Trump held one of his first public events after the COVID-19 pandemic began on July 3, 2020, at Mount Rushmore, featuring a fireworks display. The Biden administration is expected to prohibit fireworks at the monument this year.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem reportedly presented Trump last year with a model of Mount Rushmore with his face added, prompting rumors she might replace Mike Pence on the GOP ticket. Some experts say there’s not enough space left to add a fifth face.
