Tragic mum dies after diving in water to save pet dog – but pooch survives

A beloved mum-of-two has died in a heartbreaking accident after she tried selflessly to stop her dogbeing swept out to sea.

Christine Robinson, 57, from Eastham, Wirral, died on the afternoon of July 6 2020, in the River Mersey at King's Parade, New Brighton, reports the Liverpool Echo.

She had been walking her pet dog with her son Niall when it was swept into the water while on a slipway.

The pair then got into difficulty while trying to retrieve the pet.

Niall and the dog were both rescued in a major operation involving the RNLI, Coastguard, Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service.

But Ms Robinson, who worked as a pharmacy technician for Boots, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, despite the heroic efforts of the emergency services and passers-by.

At the inquest into her death at Liverpool coroners' court on Wednesday (April 20), Richard Jones, operations manager at Holyhead Coastguard, was asked about a three-minute gap between the emergency call coming in and a rescue crew being assigned to the incident.

Joseph Hart, assistant coroner for Liverpool and Wirral, commented: "Three minutes is a long time."

The court heard Mr Jones assigned the New Brighton inshore lifeboat to the incident, the crew had already launched and were on their way to the scene even before the coastguard alerted them.

He said there were a number of reasons for the three-minute lag, such as dealing with other incoming calls, "grading" the severity of the incident, and analysing information such as weather conditions.

Ms Robinson's body was recovered from the rocks around 100 yards away from New Brighton promenade and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following her death, her family released an emotional tribute describing her as a "kind hearted" person who had "a positive impact on every person's life".
