Tourist, 27, suffers freak death in France as window shutter falls onto her

An Italian tourist was killed in a tragic accident during a holiday in France.

Turin-native Carlotta Grippaldi died when she was shockingly hit over the head by a shutter falling from a building she was standing next to.

It happened in the old town of Briancon, in Southwest France on Saturday, August 13.

The town actually dates back to the first century BC, forming part of the kingdom of King Cottius – his father, King Donnus, was close friends with the infamous Julius Cesear.

The Mirror reports that the 27-year-old was leaving a restaurant with a group of friends when disaster struck.

She did receive medical attention at the scene, but died on her way to the hospital while in an ambulance, French media reports.

According to local news, the woman had graduated as a ski instructor in 2019, and taught at the slopes of the famed Vialattea skiing school.

A local witness said: “I heard a noise and people screaming.

“I left the shop and there was a girl lying on the ground.

“People were trying to revive her.”

A police investigation is ongoing, with manslaughter and a danger to the life of others part of the charges being looked into.

The Mayor of Briançon, Arnaud Murgia, announced that as a result of the horror scene, the municipal technicians, together with firefighters, will carry out inspections on all buildings in the historic town centre to check the facades and “to prevent other detachments and accidents from happening”.

The woman was working for famed Lavazza coffee company, and visited Briancon on a regular basis, according to local news reports.

The town is one of the highest points in France, and only has around 2,000 residents living all year round.

There are another 11,000 who regularly travel there for work, or use the town as a base at certain times of the year.

It is located on the Italian border, near the Serre Chevalier ski area.
