Students are flocking to Open University so they can study at home

• Teenagers are choosing to study at the Open University as costs continue to bite
• Figures from the OU reveal 17 per cent of students are opting to study from home
• Another survey found 67 per cent of students are concerned about cost of living

Teenagers are flocking to study at the Open University so they can live at home and work through the cost of living crisis.

Figures from the OU reveal a 17 per cent increase in 18 and 19-year-olds opting to study from home over the past five years, with university chiefs reporting an upsurge in interest for its distance-learning courses. 

Another survey found 67 per cent of students in higher education are concerned about managing their living costs this autumn, rising to 85 per cent of over-30s still in education. 

The poll by Universities UK, which represents 140 educational institutions, found 55 per cent of concerned students feared rising costs might prevent them from completing their studies.

OU student Kianna Graham, 21, of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, said: ‘I need to stay and study at home because I can work at the same time. Especially with the prices of transport going up too, this is the best option for me.

‘I have friends who don’t know how they’re going to cope with living away from home.’
