Princess Diana turned down £7million and the opportunity to snog Kevin Costner as the leading lady in The Bodyguard sequel while toying with the idea of becoming an actress – an idea Prince William would have supported.

Following her divorce from Prince Charles, Princess Diana was offered £7 million to star alongside Kevin Costner in the sequel to the smash-hit film The Bodyguard, that made her consider starting a career in acting, royal author Christopher Anderson claimed.

The Hollywood actor was in the process of making the sequel and offered the Princess the leading lady role as part of conversations initiated by Sarah Ferguson.

As a requirement of the role, Princess Di would have had to kiss the star which she was reportedly nervous about due to how controlled her life was.

Anderson told podcast Royally US: “She did turn down a movie role from Kevin Costner toward the end of her life.

"He offered seriously her the role in the sequel to ‘The Bodyguard‘, you know the great movie.

“He offered $10 million dollars (£7 million) and she was really seriously toying with the idea."

However, Princess Diana ultimately turned the role down.

"She never would have done it because I think she would have thought that was too much," Anderson added.

The invitation did however get the Princess thinking about an acting career, which Anderson said she discussed with Prince William who had become his mother's personal advisor during the collapse of her marriage to Prince Charles.

“She was taking it very seriously and she talked about it with William.

"I think William probably would have urged [her] to do it when she got the script but anyway it's a very different world we're living in today.”

In a weird coincidence, Anderson said the film's script landed on Costner's desk the day of Princess Diana's death.

Speaking about the proposals last year, Kevin Costner told PeopleTV: “Diana and producers were eager to get the project off the ground.

“The studio liked the idea of doing a Bodyguard 2 with Diana taking on a role in the same kind of capacity as Whitney. Nobody really knew that for about a year.”

Recalling his conversation with Princess Diana about kissing scenes, the actor said she was "incredibly sweet" and "a little nervous because her life was very governed".

However, he did his best to reassure her any on-screen intimacy would would be handled with care, saying that there would be a little bit of kissing, but "we can make that OK too".
