Prince William slams billionaire space race after William Shatner’s flight

Prince William slammed the billionaire space race of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk in a rare outspoken interview about the threats of climate change.

The Duke of Cambridge told the BBC that the world's greatest minds should be trying to solve the problems affecting all of us, not looking for alternative homes off-world.

Billionaires' adventures into space got more attention after Star Trek actor William Shatner jetted off to the final frontier with Bezos' rocket Blue Origin.

Shatner said the journey was "the most profound experience I can imagine".

Yet William was unimpressed.

He said: "We need some of the world's greatest brains and minds fixed on trying to repair this planet, not trying to find the next place to go and live."

Promoting the first annual Earthshot Prize awarding £50m to climate innovators, Prince William also took the opportunity to celebrate the contributions to climate change awareness made by his dad Prince Charles.

William explained: "He's had a really rough ride on that, and I think you know he's been proven to being well ahead of the curve, well beyond his time in warning about some of these dangers.

"He progressed that before anyone else thought it was a topic."

William also said it was the inspiration of his grandfather Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh to get involved in environmental efforts.

Yet the future king also warned upcoming Cop26 talks were "crucial" and that it would be an "absolute disaster" for his own son, Prince George to have to campaign for climate action in 30 years.

William added: "If we're not careful we're robbing from our children's future through what we do now.

"And I think that's not fair.

"Young people now are growing up where their futures are basically threatened the whole time. It's very unnerving.

"We can't have more clever speak, clever words but not enough action."
