Pretty little island with stunning beaches that’s still 20C in December

It’s absolutely freezing in the UK right now, so what better way to distract ourselves than looking for a break for some much-needed winter-warmth? This island in the Mediterranean sea is a prime winter holiday destination, and with average temperatures of 20C in winter months you can enjoy the beach year round.

The small Maltese isle of Gozo has a very ‘off the grid’ feel to it – not greatly known among eager tourists, and rich in culture.

Gozo is just off the north coast of the main island, and aptly named as ‘one of the greenest islands’ in the Mediterranean sea by The Independent, the sustainable isle provides many open, green spaces for visitors. The Salt Pans are must-visit for holiday-makers, which are photo-worthy rock pools that fill up with sea water during winter storms, and the evaporate during the scorching summer months.

This leaves the pools glistening with pure white salts that look like crystals. The Inland sea is another popular attraction – it is a natural saltwater lagoon, connected to the main sea flow via a small arch, not dissimilar to the UK’s own Durdle Door.

The solo stack of limestone known as Fungus Rock is another good photo opportunity, 60 metres of rock surrounded by water, in Dwerja.

It’s a good location for a spot of snorkelling and scuba diving, with the surrounding cliff faces being a dramatic backdrop. Gozo is the home of World Heritage Ġgantija Temples, which are older than Egypt’s pyramids – for keen culture fans, this is a must-see.

For winter visitors, there should not be too many crowds, despite it being one of the island’s greatest crowd pullers. Another cultural extravaganza is Ċittadella, a citadel which is said to have once been teh acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos.

Thanks to its small size, you will be able to conquer much of island on foot, but if you feel like a more relaxed trip, you can tour the local region on its fleet of electric tuk-tuks, on a guided tour.
