President Biden met Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and other senior royals Friday at a reception for the Group of Seven world leaders at the Eden Project botanical garden.
The commander-in-chief sat on the far left in a group shot, with the Queen in the center with UK leader Boris Johnson in between her and the president, and France’s Emmanuel Macron to the monarch’s right.
They posed together before a reception for the G7 leaders at the world’s largest indoor rainforest, the Eden Project, close to where they are holding a summit in southwest England.
The 95-year-old monarch smiled as she arrived with other senior members of her family, including eldest son and heir to the throne Prince Charles, his wife, Camilla, as well as Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton.
The newly widowed monarch was greeted by Johnson, who appeared to share a joke before they walked into the reception.
Before posing with the others, the Queen also met Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, who had previously met with Kate Middleton in a visit to a UK school.
It was the Queen’s first major meeting with world leaders since the coronavirus pandemic started.
Her Majesty is also due to meet the Bidens for tea at Windsor Castle on Sunday after the summit has concluded.
The first lady had said Thursday that “Joe and I are both looking forward to meeting the Queen.”
“That’s an exciting part of the visit for us,” she said of their first major overseas trip.
