  • But the Daily Mail columnist insists he just wants everyone to take a chill pill

Piers Morgan accuses Meghan Markle of telling ‘downright lies’ over her claim to have been married to Harry three days before their ceremony in Windsor in a new interview.

The Mail Online editor at large makes the comments in a preview clip of his grilling on Australian television by Karl Stefanovic in a 60 Minutes for one-on-one interview.

A clip from what’s set to be a compelling interview shows Morgan calling Meghan a liar – and says she even personally complained to his boss before he was sensationally quit Good Morning Britain he led to the top of the breakfast ratings.

In the new interview, Morgan also launches a fresh assault on cancel culture after quitting GMB after a live war of words with the show’s weatherman Alex Beresford over Harry and Meghan.

In her Oprah interview, Meghan raised eyebrows when she told Miss Winfrey that she and Harry were married ‘just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury’

Now, the bestselling author of ‘Wake Up: Why the World has Gone Nuts’ has hit back at the couple – and the ‘woke’ goody two-shoes-types who are in their thrall.

Recalling Ms Markle’s claim that she and Harry were secretly married three days before the official ceremony, he fires up in the interview: ‘They were downright lies.

‘I don’t believe a word she says. That [ceremony] would make the Archbishop of Canterbury a criminal.’

In March this year, the Archbishop of Canterbury rejected the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s claim that he married them at a secret ceremony before their Windsor Castle wedding.

Breaking his silence on what the couple told Oprah Winfrey, Justin Welby said he signed Harry and Meghan’s wedding certificate on the day millions watched them marry.

The legal wedding was on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at St George’s Chapel, he said.

He was asked ‘what happened with Meghan and Harry? Did you really marry them three days before the official wedding?’

He said: ‘I had a number of private and pastoral meetings with the duke and duchess before the wedding.

‘The legal wedding was on the Saturday. I signed the wedding certificate, which is a legal document, and I would have committed a serious criminal offence if I signed it knowing it was false.

Piers Morgan (above)  launches a fresh attack on the cancel culture that saw him booted off UK TV screens following an on-air row about the young Royal outcasts.

One of Piers Morgan’s biggest critics in Australia has been Karl Stefanovic who has furiously defended the young couple against Morgan’s attacks

Stefanovic has been one of one of Morgan’s biggest critics in Australia and has previously furiously defended the young couple against Morgan’s attacks.

Talking about Morgan’s feud with Meghan, Stefanovic said in 2018: ‘I mean, what is that guy on? He’s lost the plot completely.

‘I don’t know how his poor co-host puts up with it. Imagine putting up with a dude like that who is so up himself and so egotistical that he would assume to say those things about her.’

He was reacting to

‘It’s disgusting. You wouldn’t put up with it. He needs to go. He’s off the mark here.’

In Sunday night’s TV confrontation, Stefanovic meets Morgan on television again, branding Morgan ‘just an angry old man’ – sparking laughter from the media veteran.

Morgan hits back to insist: ‘Freedom of speech is actually more important than the Meghan Markle debacle.

‘Who are these ‘woke’ people marching around like they are Kim Jong-un with a dash of Vladimir Putin.

‘Come on everybody, take a chill pill.’

But Stefanovic retorts: ‘Are you going to take one?’

Morgan also cheekily quipped Australian viewers would prefer him to host Nine’s Today show than Stefanovic.

But despite their differences over the Royals, insiders say the pair got on well during the 45 minute interview, with Stefanovic in Sydney and Morgan near his home in Kensington, London.

‘It is fair to say there were surprisingly few fireworks,’ said one of the production crew. ‘It seems these two aren’t miles apart on this topic.

‘If anything there were more fireworks about cricket, with plenty of trash talk pre-interview about who was going to win the Ashes in December… Australia or England.’

The insider added: ‘Piers said the one Australian he wants to cancel is Steve Smith before The Ashes.

‘And Piers was also winding Karl up saying now he was sure that now he is free, people would prefer to see him host the Today Show.’

Daily Mail Australia’s Piers Morgan is interviewed exclusively by Karl Stefanovic on 60 Minutes on Channel Nine at 8.30pm (AEDT)
