Olympic skater, 31, dies in horror crash but her baby son miraculously survives

Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul has died in a crash involving seven cars while her baby son survived.

Ms Paul, 31, was driving with her son when a truck smashed through a construction zone just outside Toronto, careering straight into a line of waiting cars.

Her child was taken to a children’s hospital where he was treated for injuries deemed not to be life-threatening.

Ms Paul competed at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and won three Canadian Championship medals during her illustrious career on the ice.

Skate Canada described Ms Paul, who retired from the sport in 2016, as a “shining star” in a statement confirming the tragic news.

The statement paid tribute to her impact on the sport and her work to bring skating to a new audience.

It read: “It is with a heavy heart that Skate Canada announces the sudden passing of a cherished member of our skating community, Alexandra Paul.

“A shining star on and off the ice, Alexandra’s dedication, passion, and remarkable talents have left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating.”

Skate Canada added: “Her commitment to excellence was matched only by her warmth and kindness, which endeared her to fellow athletes, coaches, and fans alike.

“As we remember Alexandra’s contributions to the sport, we also reflect on the camaraderie and sportsmanship she exemplified.

“She was not only an accomplished athlete but also a true role model for aspiring skaters, demonstrating the values of resilience, perseverance, and sportsmanlike conduct.”

A GoFundMe page has raised £113,000 (CAN$193,000) towards helping Mitch Islam raise son Charlie as a widowed father with donations also helping towards funeral and commemorative services.

The page reads: “As a Canadian success story is tragically cut short, Alex will be remembered as a passionate, determined young lady who could illuminate any room she entered.

“She was not only kind, educated, witty, and resolute, but Alex was also a staple in the international Figure Skating community representing Canada at the Olympics.

“But above all, Alex will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, wife and mother to Charlie.”
