OJ Simpson ‘free man’ as parole ends early over 20yrs after wife’s death

OJ Simpson has become a "free man" as his parole ended in Nevada after being convicted for leading five men in a 2007 confrontation with two sports collectables dealers at a Las Vegas casino-hotel.

He was jailed for nine years in 2008 after leading the gang, two who were carrying guns, in the brush with the dealers, but Simpson said he just wanted to retrieve personal mementoes and items stolen from him.

But the 74-year-old former football running back is now a "completely free man" after he was discharged from parole effective December 1.

Simpson had a hearing before the Nevada Board of Parole, Nevada State Police spokeswoman Kim Yoko Smith said on Tuesday.

"Mr Simpson is a completely free man now," said Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson’s lawyer in Las Vegas.

Simpson declined an immediate interview, his attorney said.

He had been scheduled for discharge from parole on February 9, but the parole board granted him about three months of good behaviour credits.

The sports star, nicknamed The Juice, was freed in October 2017 and in the three years since his release, OJ has built a new life for himself in Las Vegas.

He lives in a luxury mansion surrounded by palm trees with a swanky outdoor pool, and regularly enjoys long walks by a stunning lake close to his home.

Despite being in prison during the years social media really took off, he has become a regular on Twitter – regularly sharing videos of his posh pad.

He's reportedly funding his lavish lifestyle using his NFL pension – which he reportedly didn't start claiming until after his release.

Simpson is believed to have banked around $600,000 from the fund, while OJ is also reportedly said to be making some cash signing sports memorabilia, with estimates suggesting he can make up to $400 per autograph.

In what became one of the most famous cases of the century, Simpson was acquitted of the 1994 murder of his wife, Nicole Brown, and was represented by Robert Kardashian – father to daughters Kim, Kourtney and Khloe.

Simpson was later found responsible for both murders in a civil trial in 1997.

The shamed star continues to owe millions to the families of murdered Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman.

However, US law states he does not have to pay them back using his pension fund.
