Britain's Ministry of Defence has shared the devastating impact of rockets Vladimir Putin's Russia is using in Ukraine.

The MoD took to Twitter on Wednesday evening relaying the message that Russia has confirmed its deployment of TOS-1A thermobaric weapons.

It captioned a chilling video of the damage the weapons can cause, saying: "The Russian MoD has confirmed the use of the TOS-1A weapon system in Ukraine. The TOS-1A uses thermobaric rockets, creating incendiary and blast effects."

A short clip shared by the MoD explaining the TOS-1A, describes it as an armoured multiple rocket launcher that can launch rockets with thermobaric warheads.

The video says: "It was used by Russian forces in both Afghanistan and Chechnya. Thermobaric weapons use oxygen from the surrounding air to create a high temperature explosion.

"They also have blast effects that last for longer than a conventional explosive.

"The impact of the TOS-1A is devastating. It can destroy infrastructure and cause significant damage to internal organs and flash burns, resulting in death to those exposed."

Despite the pain and suffering caused by thermobaric weapons, the MoD states they are not illegal but their use is strictly regulated by the law of armed conflict.

One of the terms demands they cannot be used against military targets if there is a risk that civilians will also be impacted.

Another rule states thermobaric weapons are outlawed from use if the damage caused would outweigh the military advantage gained or inflict unnecessary suffering.
