Mitchell Ryan dead at 88: Dark Shadows star and veteran actor passes away, friends announce

DARK Shadows star and veteran actor Mitchell Ryan passed away early Friday morning.

The television actor was 88 years old at the time of his death, according to a Facebook post by his former costar Kathryn Leigh Scott.


Ryan played ex-con Burke Devlin on the iconic TV show Dark Shadows before leaving the series in 1967.

Scott played Devlin's love interest, Maggie Evans on the daytime soap.

"My sweet, beloved friend Mitch died early this morning," Scott said in her tribute post.

"He was a great gift in my life. I cherish my warm memories of his beautiful soul. I'm heartbroken."

Throughout his impressive career, the character actor starred alongside the likes of Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, and Danny Glover.

Ryan played an expansive range of roles over the years, including a cult leader and even a portrayal of Hugh Hefner.

Ryan appeared in many TV shows including All My Children, Golden Girls, and Murder, She Wrote.

He published a memoir in 2021 titled Fall of a Sparrow.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Ryan died of congestive heart failure at his Los Angeles home, according to his stepdaughter Denise Freed.
