Met Office warns -13C arctic freeze and snow to return to UK after Christmas

Snowfall in the UK could be arriving days after Christmas, pouring doubt on whether Brits will experience a white Christmas.

The Weather Outlook's interactive maps show the freezing conditions the country has experienced of late is set to make a return in the beginning of 2023.

Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services spoke on the differing weather models that are out there making it difficult for forecasters to hang their hats on the weather in the run-up to Christmas and the New Year.

He said: "It all remains in the melting pot, models are not agreeing but I’m still going for a north/south profile split for Christmas and a colder potentially snowier run into the New Year."

He added: "By the way of flakes or sleet – it will probably be nothing major. We are having to watch and wait, maybe even on the day.

"I have Edinburgh & Leeds as the current fav cities but even at this stage nothing is for granted."

Mr Dale wasn't alone in his predictions as Ian Finnis, a senior forecaster at NetWeather, agreed with his forecast of a north/south split.

He said: "The mild conditions look to remain for the rest of this week for most of England and Wales.

"However, after a few mild days across Scotland, cold air looks to return from the north towards the end of this week and this cold air could spread further south into England for Christmas, but there’s a great deal of uncertainty how far south and where there could be snow in this colder air.

"So we’ll see a north-south split develop across the UK, with colder arctic air to the north of the boundary and milder conditions to the south."

The Met Office has warned of an arctic freeze with colder conditions likely to take hold, contributing to freezing fog and overnight frosts.
