Man dies in front of his family after plunging 200 feet from cliff at Dorset beauty spot on the hottest day of the year

A MAN has died after falling off a cliff at a coastal beauty spot in front of his horrified family on the hottest day of the year.

The tourist, who was in his 40s, had climbed part-way up the 200ft tall Stair Hole at Lulworth Cove, Dorset, when he slipped and fell.

An air ambulance, coastguards, a lifeboat crew and police raced to the scene at 6.30pm yesterday as temperatures soared into the late 20s.

The man received treatment from paramedics – but was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses described how the man's family was consoled by police officers and coastguard members at the time.

It is not known how far the man, who was from the Bedfordshire area, fell.

A spokeswoman for Dorset Police said: “Dorset Police received a report at around 6.30pm on Sunday that a man had fallen off rocks at Stair Hole near to Lulworth Cove in the Purbeck area.

"Officers attended the incident together with other emergency services. Very sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His family has been informed and the coroner has been notified. There were no suspicious circumstances."

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard confirmed that crews were sent to the scene including a coastguard helicopter.

The man is the sixth person to die on the hottest day of the year yesterday as Brits flocked to beaches and beauty spots.

It is also among a number of incidents to have taken place at beauty spots in Dorset this past year.

Mum-of-five Tahira Jabeen, 46, slipped and fell 100ft to her death from cliffs at nearby Man O' War Bay, which lies close to Durdle Door.

Three people were also seriously injured in May last year after jumping from the arch of rocks at Durdle Door.

Videos posted online showed tourists climbing 200ft up the rock and leaping off.

Today, coastguards issued fresh warnings about the dangers of taking selfies close to cliff edges after a man was seen balancing on a 19ins wide cliff path at Old Harry Rocks, near Swanage, while posing for a photo.
