Last surviving member of legendary Band of Brothers WWII paratrooping unit dies

The only surviving member of the infamous ‘Band of Brothers’ World War Two platoon, Bradford Freeman has died at the age of 97.

Freeman, who signed up to fight the Nazis when he was just 18, died on Sunday (July 3) leaving behind sister, two daughters, four grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Freeman’s actions as part of the world-renowned American Army unit Easy Company rocketed him to fame in the years with the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

Freeman’s work in the easy company paratroopers unit was as a mortarman in the 101st Airborne Division.

Together with the rest of Easy Company, Freeman took part in a daring D-Day raid over Normandy by parachuting in and setting up a protective perimeter around the strategic point of Brecourt Manor.

Later on in the dying embers of the war, Freeman along with Easy Company pushed on into Europe participating in famous battles like Operation Market-Garden and the Battle of the Bulge.

In the Bulge, Freeman was wounded by shrapnel in his right knee and would not see any more conflict in the war.

His obituary reads: “After the war, he returned to Caledonia and married Willie Louise Gurley on June 29, 1947, and worked as a mail carrier for 32 years.

“Our dad was always astounded that a country boy from Mississippi was able to see so many places and meet so many interesting people.”
