‘Larger than life’ dad falls 320ft to his death trying to get fit on cliff hike

A dad trying to get fit with a hike in the countryside died falling 100metres (328ft) off a cliff edge.

Robert Bell, 48, has been described as being "larger than life" who selflessly took on every role needed at his local football club in Adelaide, Australia, over a 30 year period.

Tributes have flooded in on Facebook for the father-of-two who is believed to have suffered a medical episode at about 8.30am on Saturday, while walking alone on a clifftop trail at Morialta Conservation Park, north-east Adelaide.

Robert's wife Rebecca broke the gut-wrenching news to friends and family over social media, she said: "It is with a broken heart that I post that the love of my life lost his life today (Saturday).

"Thank you to all his friends and our family who have been there for the girl[s] and I today. He has left a massive hole in my heart. RIP my love."

The football fan was dubbed as 'Belly' and 'The Bellmiester' by pals at Ingle Farm Soccer Club where he played, worked as the secretary, referee and even the club sponsor.

Players took to the pitch marking his tragic death with black armbands each.

The club wrote on Facebook: "He was an all-around club man. He is loved by us all and will be missed even more."

Friend Jason Walker added: "Robert Bell was one of those larger than life characters whose mouth matched the size of his heart.

"Taken away from us far, far too soon, he leaves behind a legacy like all the greats do.

"You'll be one of the first people I speak to when I eventually join you on the other side. Take care my mate and rest in peace."

An investigation has been launched into Robert's death, as the authorities aim to determine how the 48-year-old fatally fell as he put in steps to get fitter.

South Australian Deputy Premier Susan Close told ABC Radio on Monday: "SAPOL is leading in terms of what actually happened for Mr Bell and that tragedy … but we will also undertake our own investigation about the condition of the track, the signage, and any other factors that come up.

"There are areas that are steep, there are areas that are slippery and areas that don't have guardrails and it isn't a sort of guided experience the entire way where you're not ever in danger of looking over a cliff edge, it is part of the experience."

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
