Knife-wielding monkey terrorises town, claims shopping centre as his territory

A town in Brazil is being terrorised by a monkey armed with a jungle knife.

Video of the armed-to-the-teeth animal has emerged from Corrente, in Piaui state, which is near a large national park.

In the footage, the viscous-looking monkey is perched on a balcony at the town's shopping centre. But in its hands, the jungle tough-nut is wielding a knife that’s almost as big as it is.

First the primate waves the blade around as if threatening passers-by and then it seems to sharpen it on the stone wall.

Local resident Alessandro Guerra – who shot the video – says the monkey has been running riot in the town for a week.

"It's been making a mess. It's already damaged roofs and this week it showed up with this knife," he said.

But it appears that despite being heavily armed and looking menacing, the monkey is not looking to attack people.

“It lets people touch it, it even goes to their houses and many have already taken it by the hand,” said Alessandro, who added that residents are divided over the primate's presence.

He said: "Those who are suffering from the mess are worried, as they can't leave their doors or windows open.

"Others are finding it funny. It's become a meme."

Corrente's local authority said it was aware of the case, but it didn’t have the means to able to collect the animal.

Alessandro said the Environmental Police had also been called, but the nearest detachment was about 400 miles away.

Locals have instead been redirected to the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, which said it would look into the case.

Alessandro said he had tried to alert the authorities "out of concern for people and out of concern for the animal itself”.

He added: "I did it to avoid something more serious because its behaviour swings a lot. Have you thought about if it throws a knife at someone?”
