Kate Middleton has stepped into Prince Philip's role as "the glue" that holds the Royal Family together, an expert has claimed.

The Duchess of Cambridge is said to be stepping into the role of "trying to keep things together" since the Duke of Edinburgh died in April aged 99.

The Royal Family has endured a tough start to 2021 with the death of Philip and a number of interviews featuring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle criticising the family.

These included claims of racism by an unnamed royal and accusations of "total neglect" by the family.

In an interview on 60 Minutes Australia, Vanity Fair royal editor Kate Nicholl said she believes Kate is in the position of keeping things together for the family.

She said: "I think Kate is the glue. In the same way that the Duke of Edinburgh was always the one who would help resolve family issues.

"He was the patriarch of the family. I see Kate stepping into that role. Trying to keep things together."

Harry and Meghan have rocked the royal boat with a number of controversial interviews in recent months.

Most recently Harry accused the Royal Family of "total neglect" in his new Apple TV series on mental health, The Me You Can't See.

Speaking to Oprah Winfrey, he said he and Meghan where "followed, photographed, chased and harassed" within days of their relationship becoming public, but claimed the couple received little support.

Harry said: "I felt completely helpless. I thought my family would help – but every single ask, request, warning, whatever it is, just got met with total silence or total neglect.

"We spent four years trying to make it work. We did everything that we possibly could to stay there and carry on doing the role and doing the job."

Harry returned to the UK for the first time in a year to attend Philip's funeral in April, and Kate was credited with acting as 'peacemaker' between warring brother Harry and Prince William.

Royal expert Ms Nicholl also discussed the line of succession and whether the throne would skip the next in line, Prince Charles, when the time comes.

She said: "A lot of people think it would make more sense to skip a generation and let the crown move straight to William and Kate.

"Possibly they might prove a more popular King and Queen than Charles and Camilla.

"But the idea of breaking constitution and that is essentially everything the Royal Family is built upon is really something that's not going to happen."
