Jeremy Vine’s map of MAYHEM: How cycling BBC star has filmed 27 clashes this year during his one-man war on ‘bad drivers’ and ‘petrosexuals’

  • EXCLUSIVE: Cycling BBC star filmed 27 incidents with fellow road users in 2023

He’s the cycling BBC presenter on a relentless mission to shame the dodgy drivers blighting London’s roads – a man who has been described as ‘willing to die in defence of the Highway Code.’

Jeremy Vine’s quest has seen him catching out foreign diplomats using their mobiles behind the wheel and van drivers dangerously cutting him up.

Capturing all the drama on his 360-degree camera and sharing it on social media, the 58-year-old TV personality has even threatened to report reckless drivers to cops.

But his actions have proven far from popular with some of his ‘petrosexual’ critics, as he calls them, being quick to blast Vine online.

Now, MailOnline can reveal all the spots across the capital where the famous cycling champion has called out drivers for causing mayhem.

Channel 5 and BBC host Jeremy Vine says drivers should not be allowed to overtake cyclists at all and motorists don’t like the fact those on bikes are faster than them in cities

Since January, he has shared 27 videos of driving that has left the presenter fuming – with many of the clips showing near-misses.

September 13 – Vine is almost run over by incompetent van driver

Tavistock Square, Central London

In the latest video uploaded to Vine’s Twitter account, the presenter had a brush with an incompetent driver who left his bike in a crumpled heap on the road.

The video showed Vine cycling down a road before entering a junction where a white van can be seen driving towards him on the other side of the road.

The vehicle then turns right across the path of Vine forcing him to stop and repeatedly honk his bike horn.

He then gets behind the van, which begins reversing into him and Vine then uses both hands to slam the back of the truck to make it stop.

Jeremy Vine posted a video to X which shows him cycling down a road before entering a junction where a white van can be seen driving towards him on the other side of the road.

September 8 – Vine is cut up by a van driver

Tavistock Place, Central London

In another incident, he can be seen cycling along Tavistock Place in West London.

The scene seems peaceful enough, but Vine sees danger approaching in the form of a van beginning to make a right turn – directly into his path.

‘He’s not turning right this guy?’ Vine says, incredulously, as the van begins it’s turning cycle.

‘No No No No NO!’, Vine can be heard screaming as he takes evasive action, ‘Jesus, this guy.’

Captioning the video, Vine said: ‘STOP THIS. It’s making it dangerous to use a bicycle.’

September 6 – Vine ‘catches a foreign diplomat’s driver on their phone’

Kensington High Street, West London

Vine claimed to catch out a foreign diplomat off-guard using a mobile phone before they bragged ‘I don’t have licence’.

The incident took place in Kensington High Street,  opposite the entrance to Kensington Palace Gardens where a host of foreign embassies are based.

‘Look at this guy, he doesn’t even see me,’ says Vine after spotting the driver on his phone.

He catches up with the man – thought to be driving an Omani diplomatic vehicle – and shouts ‘six points on your licence’ to which the male quips ‘Good boy! I don’t have a licence’.

The video shows Vine cycling down Kensington High Street, just past the gated entrance of Kensington Palace, when he spots a driver using his mobile phone

September 3 – Vine reports driver for ‘close pass’

Fisher’s Lane, West London

On September 3, Vine stopped next to a driver in Fisher’s Lane, Chiswick, after the motorist allegedly passed within inches of him,

Rapping his knuckles on the window of the, Vine tells the man: ‘You’ll be on my camera mate as a close pass.

‘I’m really sorry I have to give it to the police. I’m really sorry, you’ll get points for it.’

September 1 – Vine is ‘almost killed’ as a van cuts across him

Howland Street, Central London

On September 1, the BBC Radio 2 presenter uploaded a clip of a van cutting across him to turn left in Howland Street, as the startled father-of-two tooted his horn in disbelief.

‘This is the guy who kills you,’ Vine tweeted to his 788,000 followers.

Not afraid of confrontation, Vine has even filmed himself calling out motorists for their dodgy driving.

Echoing the macho motto of retro video game star Duke Nukem on his X account, Vine says: ‘I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubblegum.’

August 21 – Vine is the victim of a close pass from a van drivers door

Uxbridge Road, West London

Whilst on a morning cycle, Vine spots an illegally parked van which is squatting on a cycle lane.

With no other option, he is forced to cycle further out into the road and pass the driver’s wheel side front door.

As he does so, the door suddenly opens, causing Vine to yell: ‘Woah”.

Captioning the video, the presenter said: ‘I’m starting to think driver psychology is the key to keeping myself safe when I cycle.’

August 15 – Vine spots two drivers on their phone on the same road

Kensington High Street, West London

On his daily commute, Vine wrestles with a dilemma.

He has spotted two drivers on their phone while operating their vehicles  but he ‘only has time to report one of them to the police.’

After confronting one of them, he warns the driver: ‘You shouldn’t be on your phone as a cyclist will catch you.’

He later jokes that one of the driver’s excuses was the best he’s heard.

He said: “In fairness: “I only just picked up my phone because the floor is dirty” is probably the best excuse you’ll ever hear.’

August 11 – Vine furious after spotting a 4×4 driver on his phone

Kensington High Street, West London

Whilst cycling along Kensington High Street, Vine catches sight of his personal nemesis on the road in front of him.

It’s a 4×4 Range Rover, a brand of car often criticised by cyclists as being ludicrously too large for London’s shared roads.

Vine is adamant the driver will be on their phone and sure enough when he cycles over to investigate he is proven right.

Captioning his edited video, in which he applies speech marks to the passenger so she appears to say ‘Drop it, it’s Vine’, the presenter notes: ‘Love the way his wife does the full ventriloquism thing when she sees me.’

August 9 – Vine endangered by overeager fan

Hyde Park, West London

Whilst cycling along the South side of Hyde Park, Vine is suddenly honked at by a taxi who appears to recognise him.

Cycling purposefully away, Vine is distraught when the taxi overtakes him and motions to turn left – directly into the cycle lane.

After a honking battle, the two men draw level with each other and the driver screams: ‘Jeremy Vine, good to see you my friend.’

‘Always wonderful to meet a listener. Even like this.’, Vine glibly notes afterwards.

August 1 – Vine spots another 4×4 ‘tank driver’ on their phone

Hyde Park, West London

Whilst cycling next to Hyde Park, Vine spots a person driving a ‘tank’ – a term some cyclists use to describe 4×4’s.

‘Chance of tonight’s tank driver in Kensington being on his phone? ONE HUNDRED PER CENT’: he says.

After pulling up to the stationary vehicle, a visibly disgusted Vine ascertains that the driver is indeed on the phone.

On the same day, Vine tried out his drone filming along the cycle lane on Hyde Park’s northern side.

Whilst cycling along, Vine records a blue Audi speeding up behind him in order to avoid the traffic on nearby Bayswater.

Captioning the video, Vine says: ‘The best cycle lane in London, until someone in a car decides it’s his new shortcut.’

July 31 – Vine is undertaken by a 4×4

George Street, West London

A day earlier, Vine is again cut up by his mortal enemy: a 4×4.

This time the confrontation comes on George Street in West London while Vine is patiently waiting for the lights to change.

After setting off under the green light, the inpatient driver charges forward and barges ahead of Vine – subjecting him to a close pass in the process.

In the video, a clearly perturbed Vine can be heard screaming: ‘No! You’re joking!’

July 28- Vine is accosted by a ‘left turn twit’ and gives chase

Theobalds Road, Central London

At the beginning of the video, Vine sagely ponders that eternal question: ‘What if people who can’t drive had signs on the side of their cars?’

‘Watch this clown’, he continues, as his car tracks a black Ford which he has scrawled ‘Left Turn Twit’ on.

The driver then cuts off Vine with a left turn that brings him perilously close to the BBC Radio 2 DJ’s trajectory.

Vine attempts to give chase to reprimand the driver but gives up.

July 23 – A van driver shows ‘zero empathy’ to Vine

Abingdon Road, West London

Whilst cycling in West London, a van driver comes to an abrupt halt in front of Vine spreading his enormous vehicle right over the cycle box.

‘Great, why would you do that?’, the irate presenter is heard saying.

He later writes of the interaction: ‘You can hear my frustration. And this is the rule rather than the exception. Bad drivers = zero empathy.’

July 18 – A van driver gets ‘way too close’ to Vine

Piccadilly, Central London

Whilst cycling in a bus lane, Vine is tailgated by a taxi which eventually passes him at a distance the presenter gauges is ‘way too close’.

After frantically noting down the driver’s registration, Vine notes: ‘Why would a professional driver — at the wheel of a London cab — do a close pass like this on a cyclist (me) so obviously wearing a camera?

‘I just don’t get it. What is the point?’

July 15 – Vine is told to ‘f*** off’ by a van driver in a fiery confrontation

Piccadilly, Central London

During another Piccadilly jaunt, Vine and another cyclist are subject to an aggressive overtake by a van driver who is racing to ‘sit behind a red light.’

After being whizzed past, an infuriated Vine drawls level with the van driver and gives him a piece of his mind.

‘What are you doing?’, inquires Vine, ‘You just pulled straight across me!’

‘I indicated! But you two were in the middle of the f****** lane!’ comes the spit flecked response from the irate van driver, who by now has spotted Vine’s 360 camera.

The two men continue to argue and later on Vine is accosted by another van driver behind who abandons his van to tell the presenter he was ‘in the middle of the lane.’

Commenting on the sorry affair, Vine lamented: ‘This driver is probably a nice guy, and just needs to think a bit more about his fellow road users. The guy behind him in the van — not so much.’

June 20- Vine is ignored by a van despite wearing ‘the brightest helmet in London’

Tottenham Court Road, Central London

Responding to complaints from viewers of his viral videos that he is ‘not visible enough’ Vine begins this exchange by remarking he is now the owner of the ‘brightest helmet in London.’

But sadly it seems like a poor investment as yet again Vine is cut up by a van driver making an ill -advised right turn.

‘I’m taking it back to the shop’, Vine comments sardonically.

Realising his frustration, a fan comments below his video with some advice: ‘You don’t seem to have much luck on your bike. Every day there’s something you’re unhappy about. Perhaps take a bus, or if it’s a lovely day then take a walk.’

‘I see. So because of bad and criminal drivers, law-abiding cyclists should give up? Not gonna happen’, replies Vine, defiantly.

May 25 – Vine is called a ‘terrible person’ by a London bus driver

Charing Cross, Central London

In of Vine’s more infamous rides this year, the BBC Radio 2 presenter filmed the moment he was called a ‘terrible person’ by a London bus driver.

Vine is seen waiting at a red light in the city centre with a No.176 Penge bus approaching from the rear.

After they set off, Vine cycles ahead of the bus which is indicating to go left to the next red light where he stops however before he does he is honked.

Turning behind to the bus driver, the BBC presenter asks why she had honked at him.

The bus driver replies: ‘I think you’re a terrible person. You knew what you were doing. You guys are very provoking human beings and I don’t know why you do it.’

Vine replies and asks her again: ‘What did I do wrong?’

The bus driver replied: ‘You did something wrong and you know what you did.’

The light then changes and the tense standoff is finished.

Captioning the exchange, Vine said: ”’I think you’re a terrible person.’ London bus driver did the full moral outrage number on me this morning, but I DON’T KNOW WHY.’

May 15- Vine is told to ‘f*** off’ by a van driver

Moore Park Road, West London

Vine’s tactics have occasionally led to him being abused.

On May 10 this year, one furious van driver told him to ‘f*** off’ after the BBC presenter turned to speak to him when the motorist had a near-miss with another cyclist.

Vine shouted ‘woah, wow’ and turned to speak to the van driver, but he sped off and shouted ‘f*** off’ – as a passer-by said to Vine: ‘It’s alright boss, you’re in the right.’

The BBC star then said: ‘Oh my God, I might go and have a word with him.’

But he then shared a meme saying: ‘Yeah, I don’t think that’s a good idea.’

He then spoke to the passer-by who was with two other men, and said: ‘I think they could be dangerous.’ The man replied: ‘They could be, they sound very aggressive.’

Captioning the video, Vine said: ‘Crikey. I was about to have a word with this van driver, and then decided I quite fancied getting home alive.

May 10 – Vine spots a Porsche and 4×4 driver on their phones on the same day

Marylebone High Street, West London

While whizzing down Marylebone High Street, Vine spots trouble ahead in the form of a sleek black Porsche.

‘Is it fair to say — the better the car, the worse the driver?’, he questions, as he begins to tail the vehicle.

At a red light, Vine sees what he was dreading, the driver is on their phone ostensibly ‘just checking their stories.’

Undeterred, Vine informs her that it is illegal and cycles on, eventually running into the path of a man in a 4×4 also on his phone.

The Insta360 catches Vine sighing and the video ends.

April 28 – Vine is recklessly passed by a van driver

Tavistock Square, Central London

Whilst cycling through Bloomsbury in Central London, Vine hears the distant din of a van revving its engine and senses danger.

‘When I hear this guy coming, I just know he’ll be aggressive’, he predicts and sure enough the van driver comes roaring past.

Amongst the cacophony of noise brought on by the massive engine’s proximity to Vine’s equipment, a single ‘woah’ can be heard as the BBC presenter voices his disapproval of the move.

The van driver is later shown to be held up in traffic further along the road, meaning his overtake accomplished nothing.

Vine notes: ‘For the umpteenth time — reckless overtakes don’t take a second off your journey.’

April 27 – Vine is called a ‘p****’ by an Amazon delivery man

King Street, West London

Whilst cycling in Hammersmith in late April, Vine is forced to enter the road after a van driver parks cross the cycle lane.

Whilst he is re-entering the clearly marked cycle lane, he is singled out by a man carrying Amazon delivery parcels who without provocation calls him a ‘p****.’

The Channel 5 presenter the replies: ‘What me? Why?’ But the man simply repeats the insult, calling Vine a ‘p****’ a second time.

Speaking to MailOnline about the incident, Tony said: ‘I regret nothing. I called him a pr*** because he was acting like one so I told him straight.

‘He’d cycled around a white van which had pulled out of the junction and was trying to eye-ball the driver as he came past and so wasn’t concentrating on where he was going.

‘I thought he was going to crash straight into me and I hurried up a bit over the road.

‘He then stopped and looked at me but didn’t apologise so I stared back and called him a “pr***” twice. He asked me why I called him it and I so I shouted back the reason.’

Vine later hit back denying Tony’s version of events.

April 15 – Vine catches a motorcyclist on his phone and reports him

April 15 – Vine catches a motorcyclist on his phone and reports him

King Street, West London

‘Normally, I don’t show motorcyclists as I figure they take a lot of risk’ muses Vine, as he cycles down a sunny road in West London, ‘but watch this guy coming over my left shoulder.’

Entering the frame, the eye is drawn to a motorcyclist driver wearing a high vis jacket driving with his eyes locked onto his phone.

An audibly shocked Vine remarks: ‘That’s crazy man, still of he goes into the sunset and I guess that’s the end of the encounter.’

Except, it isn’t, as later on Vine catches up to the motorcyclist who is now parked in the cycle lane, still staring at his phone.

‘You’re in a cycle lane mate’ says Vine.

‘F*** off’ replies the motorcyclist.

March 24 – Vine catches 4×4 driver eating a bag of chips at the wheel

Kensington High Street, West London

In the video, filmed in west London, the 57-year-old announced that the ‘worst part of [his] commute is Kensington High Street [and] the worst part of Kensington High Street is drivers like this.’

The broadcaster was filming a woman driving a Land Rover Discovery.

Setting the scene, Vine remarked: ‘This is a 4X4 driver doing the ol’ “I can eat a bag of chips with two hands and still drive routine”

‘Against this large vehicle, a cyclist is just a bag of blood.

‘I wouldn’t have uploaded this footage were it not for what happened next.

‘It turns out she thinks its OK to be on her phone at the lights, typing two-handed.’

After catching up to the driver, he sees she is again on her phone and reprimands her.

He said: ‘Just a reminder, this behaviour gets you a £60 fine and 600 points on your license.’

Speaking to the Mail, Vine explained why the driving had irked him and what he hoped would happen.

He said: ‘This was shocking driving but unfortunately Kensington has designed its main roads as a racetrack for 4×4 drivers, which I assume is an attempt to put people off cycling.

‘I saw chips in her brown bag, which is ridiculous, but the phone at the wheel is the main offence. I hope my film will stop her killing someone.’

The broadcaster also filmed the driver on her phone at red lights

March 15 – Vine screams at a truck for cutting him off without indicating

 New Cavendish Street, Central London

In March whilst travelling through Westminster, Vine is closely following an empty truck along a quiet road.

As the pair approach a junction, Vine is shocked to see that the driver has slowed down to make a left turn.

In the process the large vehicle crosses over into the cycle lane forcing Vine to take evasive action.

Thumping his handlebar in frustration, Vine mutters: ‘Jeez, incredible.’

‘Bad drivers never take a day off’, he remarks.

March 7 – Vine is almost knocked off his bike by a bus

Theobalds Road, Central London

In March, Vine was involved in a terrfying incident with a bus on route 243 travelling on Theobalds Road, Holborn.

In the clip, Vine can be heard shouting ‘woah’ as a red double-decker bus overtook him on his right-hand side while he cycled in the middle of a bus lane.

The video was captioned: ‘WHAT. THE. HELL.’

The footage then showed the bus had stopped later down the road and Vine asked the driver ‘What’s going on?’ but there was no response.

February 14 – Vine is cut off by a car but accepts the driver’s apology

Westow Hill, South London

Whilst cycling in Westwow Hill near Crystal Palace, Vine again is forced to break to save his bacon after a car cuts directly across the cycle lane while performing a left turn.

Infuriated, Vine shouts: ‘Woah! Woah! What the hell! Jeez, do you watch the cycle lane?’

After the driver replies in confusion, Vine doubles down, asking: ‘Do you want to apologise?’

Posting the exchange, Vine continued: ‘He did say “sorry I didn’t see you.” An apology is always accepted.

‘But this gent needs a refresher driving course.’
