Holidaymaker filmed by wife performing fatal ‘tombstone’ leap from Majorca cliff near Magaluf named as former footballer

A TOURIST who died after hurling himself off a Majorcan cliff in a tombstoning stunt in front of his horrified wife and children has been named as a former footballer.

Mourad Lamrabatte's heartbroken widow filmed him jumping more than 70 feet to his death on an islet opposite the Majorcan holiday resort of Santa Ponsa near Magaluf.

Shocking footage showed the 31-year-old Dutch holidaymaker jumping from a rockface on May 12.

As he leapt into the air, Lamrabatte let out a massive scream – but didn't have enough momentum to clear the razor-sharp rocks below.

He then crashed into them at high speed, and his wife could be heard in the clip shouting: "Oh my God."

Police have not been able to question her yet about Thursday’s tragedy because she is still in a state of shock.

A post-mortem on Friday revealed Lamrabatte had drowned in a state of semi-consciousness after hitting the water rather than dying from impact injuries caused by smashing against the rocks as initially believed.

Overnight Lamrabatte’s former club SBV Vitesse, one of the oldest professional football clubs in the highest Dutch football league called the Eredivisie, offered its condolences to his family and friends in a message on its website.

Chelsea and England star Mason Mount joined the same club on a season-long loan in July 2017 and went on to win Vitesse Player of the Year.

Lambrabatte, who used the surname Besselink as a footballer before changing it, used to play with Vitesse’s reserve team Jong Vitesse.

His old club said in its statement: “Vitesse has received the sad news that Mourad Lamrabatte has tragically died.

“The former Jong Vitesse striker had just turned 31. He wore the club colours during the 2010/2011 season, when he was part of the U23 team which won the U23 cup that season.

“In July 2010 he scored in a first team exhibition game.”

A club spokesman added: “Vitesse wishes Mourad’s family and friends a lot of strength in coping with their great loss.”

Unconfirmed local reports said the his partner was filming his reckless stunt for a live streaming channel.

She was in a boat they had hired that morning with their two children.

The tragedy happened just before 2pm on Thursday on the Malgrats Islands, made up of two islets and located within the municipality of Calvia opposite the bay of Santa Ponsa.

The body of the victim, a sports fanatic who became a kickboxer after quitting football, was recovered after a search involving police divers and coastguards.

It is unclear if the local authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.

Tombstoning is a stunt where thrill-seekers hurl themselves off cliff edges and hit the water feet first.
