Gran faces double amputation after family pit bull attacked in hour of ‘carnage’

A woman has reportedly lost an arm and may lose both of her legs following a vicious attack from a dog described as an American pit-bull type.

The 72-year-old beloved gran was babysitting when the family pet savagely turned on her.

The injured woman was put in an induced coma while doctors attempted to save her legs, The Mirror reports.

A worried friend reportedly said it is "50-50" if this will be possible.

A friend told The Sun: “It was carnage. There was blood everywhere.

“The poor woman is in a shocking state. She was air-lifted to hospital, but they couldn’t save her arm and they had to put her into a coma.

“Now they’re talking about amputating both her legs as well. The doctors say it’s 50-50. It is utterly heart-breaking."

The woman had been looking after her eight-year-old granddaughter while her daughter and son-in-law were out for the day.

It was after the girl had headed out to the local play area that the dog named Rex began savagely attacking her.

It is understood that the dog weighed 12 stone and was one of five that the couple kept in the house.

Rex went after the terrified pensioner who fled to the garden where she was cornered and brutally mauled.

The attacked reportedly went on for an hour until the son in law returned from work and emergency services were called to he house.

The injuries were so severe that the woman had to be airlifted to hospital while the dog was put down by the local vet.

It is alleged that this was not the first time the dog had attacked the family.

Neighbours were reportedly fearful of Rex.

A local resident reportedly said that the dog seemed similar to the banned American pit bull breed.

Pit bulls were banned in the UK by the Dangerous Dogs Act in 1991 and since then the breed has continued to seriously injure many people in the US and Canada.
