Langalam had been reported missing for a day before her body was found drowned in a pit toilet, a type of toilet consisting of a single hole in the ground.

Following her death, her family say they believe that the toddler could have been murdered. Her mother, Nangamso, says their lives have been ripped apart as a result.

She said: “No words can describe the pain I feel. The pain is unbearable. I have not been able to sleep in weeks.

“No words can describe how I feel. I am gutted.”

Charity Amnesty International South Africa has said it hopes that the tragic incident will prompt the government to take action and get rid of pit toilets.

This sentiment has been echoed by some politicians. The official opposition party to the African National Congress, The Democratic Alliance, allegedly plans to launch legal proceedings.

Reports suggest they are going to launch a court action to force the Department of Basic Education to eradicate all pit toilets in South Africa.

A spokesman for the Department of Basic Education Elijah Mhlanga said police were still investigating the circumstances around Langalam’s death.

He said: “The school where Langalam attended received new toilets in 2018. We have conveyed our condolences to the family and supported them and we will continue to do until the truth is uncovered.”

According to local media, the spokesperson for the Provincial Education Department Vuyiseka Mboxela said the toilets at the school didn’t flush due to the lack of a sewage system in the village.

Langalam’s death comes just weeks after South Africa was rocked by another tragedy when a six-year-old boy was attacked and left to die in another part of the country.
