Wednesday’s plenary session will see a discussion of recent events in Poland, that might increase the country’s risk of moving away from European values. A key talking point will be the Polish Constitutional Court’s ruling that part of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was not compatible with the Polish constitution. Ms Von der Leyen has warned that Poland will be punished if it continues to defy the supremacy of EU law. However, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has hit back, accusing the EU of putting a “gun to our head”.
