Dad jailed after beastly dog mauled 12-day-old baby left alone on sofa to death

A dad whose newborn son was mauled to death by the beastly family dog has been jailed.

Steven Joynes, 36, was in the garden and partner Abigail Ellis in the loo when their dog attacked 12-day-old Elon as he laid on a living room sofa in September 2020.

While left alone for a brief moment little Elon Jase Ellis-Joynes suffered between 30 and 40 puncture wounds and a cut to his abdomen from his father's chow chow-cross-Alsatian.

Joynes from Doncaster has been sentenced to four years behind bars after pleading guilty to being in charge of a dangerously out of control dog causing injury resulting in death.

Elon was not even the first child in the family that the dog had bitten and his dad had been seen "hitting" and "kicking" out at it when it misbehaved, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said neighbours had "heightened their fences to stop him jumping into their gardens".

He added that the attack was "a tragedy waiting to happen" as he jailed Joynes for four years but after two he will be released on licence.

Joynes was also disqualified from keeping a dog for 15 years but all charges against Abigail Ellis were dropped.

Police last week confirmed the dog that killed 17-month-old Bella-Rae Birch on March 21 is not a banned breed as tributes poured in for the adorable toddler.

Bella-Rae fell victim to a devastating attack by her family's new pet dog inside her home in St Helen's, Merseyside.
