Brit martial arts boxer smashes skull and limbs in lorry crash in Thailand as desperate family raise £60,000 for surgery

A BRIT martial arts boxer is weathering the fight of his life after smashing his skull and limbs in a horror motorbike crash in Thailand.

Christian Richardson, from York, had recently won his first Muay Thai contest when he was struck down by a lorry on April 13.

The 32-year-old escaped with his life but had several shattered bones and is in hospital after undergoing a number of operations.

He is too ill to fly home to the UK, and his desperate family are trying to raise £60,000 for his treatment.

Sister Emmy Watson says her younger brother "miraculously didn't die or have any brain or spinal injuries".

Chris was leaving a coffee shop in Thailand when he was hit by a pickup truck, and suffered "many injuries and broken bones".

He was treated at a hospital in Koh Samui for three days before being airlifted to Bangkok.

His heartbroken family say he is unable to transfer to a hospital in the UK as he is battling an infection and needs facial and eye surgery to repair a broken cheekbone and a bad orbital floor fracture.

Emmy says they are on tenterhooks waiting to find out whether his insurance company will fork out for his medical bills – which she says is "unlikely".

She has started a GoFundMe page to help pay for his surgery – with the first two days of treatment costing an eye-watering £25,000.

"The insurance company has been assessing the case, although we think it unlikely that they will pay, a decision has not been made yet and as a result our family has had to pay out significant sums of money," Emmy wrote on the page.

"Many thanks in advance to anyone who is able to help in any way they can.

"We need to support our fighter get through this as I know we all want to see him get back to training and having a laugh with us over a pint of Guinness."

So far, well-wishers have donated more than £25,000.

Emmy says that if the insurance company covers the costs, all donations will be refunded.

It comes after a Brit tourist in Thailand was left covered in blood after fighting a knife-wielding boxer who allegedly stole his bag on a beach.

Fraser William Cowen, 23, was paddling in the sea with friends when he saw the thug run off with his belongings in Krabi, southern Thailand, last Sunday.

He sprinted after Suwit Puengsom – a former professional Muay Thai boxer – as he was trying to make a getaway on a motorcycle.
