Boy, 13, who ‘shot rival over Snapchat beef’ handed in to police by own mum

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after his own mother turned him in for allegedly shooting another teenager – over a Snapchat argument.

The suspect was charged with attempted murder on Tuesday morning, after shooting another boy of the same age.

His victim was playing basketball at a playground in the Bronx, New York, according to police.

The two boys met on Snapchat, where the suspect had threatened to shoot the other teen a day before the violence, according to local reports.

A local police spokesman told the New York Post: "They were conversing on social media and it just escalated out of control."

According to the NYP, the pair got into an argument before the suspect opened fire, shooting him in the left knee at around 5:45 pm.

A witness told local investigators that another person, who has not been arrested, handed the gun to the alleged shooter, according to police sources, and that the victim was "uncooperative" with investigators.

He was taken to Harlem Hospital in a stable condition.

The young suspect’s mother handed him in to the police, and he was charged with attempted murder, assault and harassment.

Police commissioner Dermot Shea said: "I mean, it’s terrible, all the way around – a 13-year-old.

"You know, we have to do better, I think as a society, certainly. What do you do with a 13-year-old in this circumstance?

"There is no right answer. The courts will figure it out."

"And you feel for the victim but you also think about, you know, the side of the family with the 13-year-old who] pulled the trigger here, and there are no winners.

"And that’s the message, there are no winners with gun violence.

"So we all have to do more to make sure that these incidents go on a steep, steep rapid decline."
