Boy, 12, admits accidentally shooting mum dead after telling cops fake story

A nurse thought to have been shot and killed by an intruder was actually taken out by her own 12-year-old son.

The strange incident took place in Birmingham, Alabama earlier this month.

It was originally claimed that 29-year-old Nigerian nurse Ayobiyi Cook was killed by an intruder who had broken into the family home after midnight on August 6.

The mother-of-one was found dead by police, and her son told the officers at the time that someone had broken in, shot his mother and “run away”, but doubts were expressed at the time over this when no evidence was found to back that up.

However, the story quickly changed and it now turns out that the unnamed boy shot his mother by accident – although it is unknown how he got hold of a gun.

Birmingham deputy police chief David Agee said: “The child originally fabricated a story that detectives determined was not possible.

“After investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives were able to determine that the victim’s 12-year-old son unintentionally discharged a firearm striking his mother causing her death.

“The child eventually gave a true account of what happened.

“Evidence on the scene supports that the shooting was unintentional and the offence will be addressed through the Family Court system.

“The family has been cooperative throughout the process and the child will remain with them.”

An earlier statement from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office stated that evidence found at the scene suggested the shooting was accidental – which now appears to be true.

No actual details of what took place in the Birmingham home have been revealed, and no date has yet been set for the youngster to appear in court to give evidence.

The funeral for Ms Cook will take place on Friday, August 12, and an online condolences book as been opened.
