A horror bus crash has killed at least 21 people after the vehicle careened off the road onto a railway line.
A further 12 people are injured and several are missing following the "apocalyptic" incident in Mestre in Venice, Italy, reports local news outlet La Repubblica. Between four and five people are unaccounted for.
The bus fell from an elevated part of a road and landed on the train track this evening (Tuesday, October 3). Emergency services rushed to the scene, with fire crews, police and ambulances all on hand.

Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro confirmed the tragic death toll shortly after the incident. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: "A huge tragedy struck our community this evening.
"I immediately declared the city to be in mourning, in memory of the numerous victims who were on the fallen bus. An apocalyptic scene, there are no words."
Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, also issued a statement in the wake of the crash. "I express my deepest condolences, my personal and that of the entire government, for the serious accident that occurred in Mestre," she said.

The Local Health Authority 3 of Venice triggered a "major emergencies" protocol in a bid to make sure resources would be available at all nearby hospitals. The railway line between Mestre and central Venice has also been temporarily suspended following the incident.
The circumstances leading up to the crash are not currently known. It is believed the bus became wedged between a warehouse and the track.
Some sources say the bus then caught fire, but this has not been confirmed.
