TalkRADIO host Jeremy Kyle questioned Labour’s Shadow Attorney General on Sir Keir Starmer’s alleged drinks gathering back in May. Ms Thornberry was asked how the Labour leader’s gathering was different from Boris Johnson’s party at 10 Downing Street.

“Your boss, fact here, was pictured last May, sharing a drink with party activists in Durham at the end of the day.

“What gives him the moral authority to have a go at Boris Johnson for walking into his office garden having a quick drink?”

Ms Thornbury replied: “Well, it’s completely different, because it came out, even when it came out eight months ago, we didn’t cover it up.

“We explained straight away because there’s no problem with it at all.”

“What was happening was that Kier was doing his job and he went off to see the MP in Durham,” she added.

“He then met a large number of people, not in person because that would have been wrong.

“He had a Zoom meeting with a large number of people and the event went on and he had something to eat, and a bottle of beer, and someone took his photograph through the window.

“That’s it and frankly, is that an equivalent to going into a party in the Downing Street garden?”

Ms Thornberry continued: “Not knowing that there’s a party going on staying for half an hour, inviting people, we invite you to a party, bring your own booze.

“Of course, it isn’t the fact that Keir was getting on with his job, and having a meal whilst going to do his job is not an equivalent.

“They are desperate but they’re trying to put that about, they are desperate because they are in real trouble because the truth is, is that you said Jeremy was that there was a culture being set at number 10 Downing Street, where it was in some way acceptable for people to behave in this way.

“So much so that the night before her Majesty’s husband’s funeral you had not one but two parties at Number 10.”

Mr Johnson apologised on Wednesday for attending a “bring your own booze” party in the Downing Street garden in May 2020, when the rest of the country was in lockdown.

The PM insisted he thought the party was work-related but said he recognised “with hindsight I should have sent everyone back inside”.

He said an inquiry headed by senior official Sue Gray was examining the situation but accepted “there were things we simply did not get right and I must take responsibility”.

The scandal prompted furious Tory MPs to call for the Prime Minister to resign.
