Voters in North Shropshire take to the polls next Thursday for the by-election, with former Brexit Party MEP Mr Daubney running as the candidate for actor Laurence Fox’s Reclaim Party. The poll comes at a turbulent time for the Prime Minister as he is at the centre of a row over an alleged Christmas party at Downing Street last year during Covid restrictions. Mr Johnson has repeatedly insisted rules were followed.

The Prime Minister is also facing a rebellion among Tory backbenchers over new Plan B coronavirus measures.

Mr Daubney said he expects furious Conservative voters to flock to the Reclaim Party in next week’s poll.

The Reclaim Party deputy leader told Express.co.uk: “There’s a real sense of one rule for us, one rule for them.

“Conservative voters are absolutely incandescent with rage at Boris Johnson.”

Mr Daubney added that he has “not seen anger like this on the campaign trail” since the Brexit Party swept to victory in the European elections in 2019.

He said: “We’re getting stopped all the time across the entire constituency by Conservative voters who are telling us they no longer recognise the Conservative Party.

“This area is 60 percent Leave and there are huge amounts of people who cannot hold their nose and vote for Labour, and they cannot vote for the Liberal Democrats because they spent four years trying to cancel Brexit.

“But what we’re finding is that the Reclaim Party is basically the voice of conservatism.

“We are the only true conservatives in this seat and we’re expecting to do really well.”

Mr Daubney, who represented the West Midlands in the European Parliament between 2019 and 2020, said the Tories “deserve to be obliterated” in North Shropshire.

He said: “I was elected as the MEP for the area, there’s a huge recognition of that. People know that I’ve fought for this constituency before.

“They know that I went to Brussels and I’ve got the job done. And we’re going to get the job done again.”

Earlier this week, a North Shropshire councillor defected from the Tories to the Reclaim Party and Mr Daubney predicts more will follow.

He said: “There’s going to be more of this. North Shropshire for the Reclaim Party is simply the beginning.

“We’ve been contacted by councillors all over Britain, particularly over the north and the Red Wall seats. I think we’re going to see a huge wave of defections.”

The by-election in North Shropshire, a Tory stronghold, comes after former MP Owen Paterson’s resignation.

Mr Paterson resigned after he was found to have breached lobbying rules and after the Government U-turned in a bid to save him from immediate suspension.
