Health Secretary Sajid Javid said “it’s never too late” to get protected and insisted having a third dose is vital in warding off the super-variant.

More than 90 percent of the UK population have now received their first vaccination, with every adult having been offered a booster. Despite this up to 9.5 million over-18s still haven’t received a third dose.

Mr Javid said: “I want to be clear – it is never too late to come forward for your vaccine. The first jab is the first step towards getting boosted to protect yourself against Omicron.”

Vaccines Minister Maggie Throup said: “I urge you to make it your New Year’s resolution and book so you can get boosted now.” Their pleas come as the research shows unvaccinated people with Omicron are eight times more likely to end up in hospital than those who are boosted.

The latest research by the UK Health Security Agency shows the importance of coming forward for a third dose of vaccine. The findings confirm vaccine effectiveness wanes after the second jab – down to 10 percent. Among people who had two doses of AstraZeneca, there was no effect against symptomatic infection (where you are infected and show symptoms) with Omicron from 20 weeks after the second dose.

But the organisation said one dose of any vaccine was associated with a 35 percent reduced risk of hospital admission among cases with Omicron.

Most people in the UK’s booster rollout have been offered either Pfizer or Moderna.

Around two to four weeks after a booster jab, vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic infection ranged from around 65-75 percent, down to 55-70 percent five to nine weeks on.

A further 189,846 Covid-19 cases were recorded yesterday, the Government said – another new record. And 203 people died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile 51,771,384 first doses of Covid-19 vaccine had been delivered in the UK by December 30.
