To vote in the upcoming election in May 2021, you must be registered to vote. Around 48 million people living in England, Scotland and Wales will be empowered to elect almost 5,000 in May. Express.co.uk has compiled an easy guide to help you register to vote so you can have your say on May 6.

This year local elections are being held in England with about 4,650 council seats due to be elected.

English voters will elect councillors who are in charge of many services including rubbish collection, social care and library services.

In Wales and Scotland, the upcoming elections are parliamentary elections.

Voters in Scotland and Wales will choose members of parliament in Holyrood in Scotland and Senedd in Wales.

These devolved parliaments help to make key decisions concerning health, housing and education.

In addition to the local and parliamentary elections, London votes will also elect 25 members of the London Assembly on May 6, including a mayor.

There will be more mayoral elections in:

  • Bristol
  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
  • Doncaster
  • Greater Manchester
  • Liverpool
  • Liverpool City Region
  • North Tyneside
  • Salford
  • Tees Valley
  • West Midlands
  • West of England
  • West Yorkshire.

Police and crime commissioners across England and Wales will also be voted on at that time.

These individuals are elected officials in England and Wales responsible for securing efficient and effective policing of a police area.

Only one by-election is due to be held on May 6: Hartlepool.

The previous MP, Mike Hill, resigned on March 16 following allegations of “sexual harassment and victimisations”.

The former Labour MP has denied the allegations and is due to face an employment tribunal later this year looking into the claims.
