Labour has demanded Jacob Rees-Mogg’s immediate resignation as the Conservative’s sleaze crisis deepens. Shadow Leader of the Commons Thangam Debbonaire told Sky News’ Trevor Phillips that Mr Rees-Mogg’s position was “untenable” and the Government’s reputation is “shredded”. She also said that Prime Minister Boris Johnson should “consider his position”.

This comes amid mounting pressure on the Prime Minister, as new opinion polls show his personal approval figures hitting their lowest-ever level.

A new Opinium poll for the Observer shows ratings for Johnson and his party have slumped dramatically since last weekend due to the Owen Paterson scandal.

Despite the ongoing furore, cabinet minister George Eustice told Sky News that he doesn’t agree with “sleaze” accusations against his party.

He described the controversy as a “Westminster storm in a teacup”.
